How to prepare for a newborn or family photoshoot
The best family photographs do not come from everyone sitting perfectly still. They come from a session with enough time for people to settle, connect, and be themselves.

Bring the practical essentials
For newborn sessions, pack extra feeds, nappies, and a dummy if you use one. For older children, bring a familiar snack and a favourite comfort item if it helps them feel secure between photographs.
Choose clothes that work together
- Choose a simple colour palette rather than matching everyone exactly.
- Avoid large logos and very busy patterns that compete with faces.
- Bring a spare outfit for children, especially for cake smash sessions.
Expect breaks and imperfect moments
Feeds, cuddles, wobbly smiles, and little changes of plan are part of a family session. A calm pace gives the photographer more opportunities to capture genuine connection rather than rushing from pose to pose.
Leave the final selection until the viewing
You do not need to decide which photographs you love while the camera is still out. The separate viewing appointment gives you time to compare images, choose favourites, and decide what you would like to print or display.
